Museum Shop Interpreter
Almost 100,000 people, including residents as well as visitors from around the world visit Koke'e Natural History Museum each year. They come to the Museum for trail information, to learn more about Hawai'i's unique ecosystems and cultures, and to browse through the Museum Shop's thoughtful selection of books and crafts.
These visitors need guidance and information during their time in the park , and this guidance can be provided by trained volunteer interpreters. Working with the museum staff, these individuals are the front-liners who make a difference in the quality of a visitor's experience by::
1. Providing trail information and responding to a wide variety of questions. 2. Interpreting exhibitions and displays. 3. Assisting visitors with purchases at the museum shop. 4. Occasionally providing park orientations or slide shows for groups.
They can also support the museum operations by assisting with:
- Restocking book shelves.
- Care and maintenance of the museum.
- Assisting with quarterly inventory.
- Occasionally answering the telephone.
- Occasionally taking program registrations.
- Encouraging voluntary calabash contributions and memberships.
Training
Interpretive Training Series, plus two days on-the-job training on cash register procedures and use, program registration and membership procedures, book restocking, etc. Ongoing self-training encouraged: volunteers for this position will be challenged to familiarize themselves with the many publications in the museum shop.CommitmentFrom 2 to 4 days per month.
Creativity Opportunities
Those interested in flower arranging are encouraged to create "interpretive bouquets" with identification of the plants in the arrangements for museum display.
